COWES WEEK the world’s largest sailing regatta based the Isle of Wight has secured a title sponsor after two years without a headline partner.
Aberdeen Asset Management replaces Skandia. At this stage the value of the sponsorship is unknown.
Cowes week attracts over 8,500 competitors and over 100,000 spectators during the week and this announcement will be a big of relief for many. The event operated in 2009 and 2010 without a headline sponsor but competitor numbers remained stable. This announcement however, will certainly raise the profile of the event once more and value adds to the event will surely come from the deal.
The competition on the water is fierce and exciting – with classes such as the Extreme 40’s and the Laser SB3’s leading the way with the action. It’s not all carbon fibre masts though, Cowes week has a class for everyone whether you are a seasoned sailor or not. The shore-side entertainment is where Cowes comes alive after racing finishes in the afternoon. Official events venues such as Peppermint Shepards Wharf and the Yacht Haven bring together mini-villages with bars, restaurants, event TV and nightclubs – where competitors and visitors to Cowes week can soak up the après-sail atmosphere. The Parade attracts the public and spectators wheras Peppermint Shepards Wharf is geared up towards the competitors.
Cowes Week has played a key part in the British sporting summer calendar and is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events. It now stages up to 40 daily races for around 1,000 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. The event has been running since 1826.
Cowes Weeks runs from 6 – 13th August, 2011.
